Are social networking sites beneficial for our society? According to statista.com, it is said that, as of 2016, 76% of Americans have some kind of social media profile. People are taking sides as to whether or not they believe social media is beneficial or harmful to society. Social media can be defined as websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. While many people believe social media is harmful to society due to the decrease in face-to-face encounters and the distraction it is said to have. I strongly believe social media is beneficial to society because it increases a person s quality of life, reduces the risk of health problems, helps you connect with people from†¦show more content†¦And according to socialnetworking.procon.org, over 50% of people learn about breaking news on social media. 65% of traditional media reporters and editors use sites like Facebook and LinkedIn for story research, and 52% use Twitter. Slaney also gives the example of AirBnB, an online marketplace and hospitality service, enabling people to list or rent short-term lodging including vacation rentals, apartment rentals, homestays, hostel beds, or hotel rooms. The online marketplace has inspired millions to travel differently, which points to a generation that is more open to connecting with strangers based on similar interests and a willingness to trust people based on their online profiles. Not only does social media help expose you to new people, it also increases the quality of life and reducing mental health problems.
